"SAW" (2024) - 20 Years of Torture & Gore (RETRO REVIEW)

In 2004, Saw quickly became an overnight sensation, immediately becoming the new face for Halloween season. Over the next seven years, fans would get more torture devices and victims, and just when we all thought it was over, the series was revamped in 2017’s Jigsaw, which led to 2021’s Spiral, and then Saw X in 2023. If that’s not enough, we can expect an eleventh installment possibly in 2025. But looking back at these films, we need to go back to that grungy bathroom where it all began, as this was the idea of two young men fresh out of film school. What they would create would change the horror genre game forever.

Ariel Powers-Schaub discusses her upcoming book about mid 2000’s horror, “Millennial Nasties!”

Though it seems like it was just yesterday to many “elder millennials,” it’s been 20 years since the horror boom that brought us “Saw,” “Hostel,” and many other bleak, gore-soaked slaughter fests.  How did these films reach the heights of mainstream popularity for a good 10 years? Author Ariel Powers-Schaub’s debut bookMillennial Nasties: Analyzing a Decade of Brutal Horror Film Violence,” answers that question.  Powers-Schaub chronicles and analyzes the films of the time period, while showing how America popularized the brutality it exported on a global scale.  She spoke with us about writing the book, her hopes for the genre, and how the moniker of “torture porn” doesn’t do enough to describe the films we’ve come to love.
