'INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR' Scares Up Highest Opening Weekend For Franchise

Its been five years since an Insidious film has graced the big screen but now the franchise is back with ‘INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR’ which is a direct sequel to the first two films and even directed by the franchise’s very own Patrick Wilson. What terrors the Lambert family has had to endure comes to an end with this film and it scared up some pretty impressive numbers over the weekend as well.

Insidious: The Red Door topped the domestic box office charts this weekend, besting Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in that film’s second weekend. In 3,188 theaters across the United States, The Red Door opened up to $32,650,000 over the weekend, giving the franchise its highest opening weekend since the release of Insidious: Chapter 2 back in 2013.

Worldwide, Insidious: The Red Door has scared up $64 million thus far. To date, the highest total worldwide number for the franchise is $167.8 million (Insidious: The Last Key).

It’s important to note that the production budget for The Red Door was just $16 million, allowing the fifth franchise installment to achieve profitability in just a matter of days.

Just to put all this in perspective, here are the rest of this films domestic numbers.

  • Insidious (2010) – $13.2 million

  • Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) – $40.2 million

  • Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) – $22.6 million

  • Insidious: The Last Key (2018) – $29.5 million

  • Insidious: The Red Door (2023) – $32.6 million

Deadline reports, “The story here is that of a husband and wife (Nanjiani and Moore) who enlist the help of a spell to travel back in time, such that they can prevent the death of their young daughter. The consequences, of course, prove to be severe.”

It’s looking like the pivot back to the Lambert family is a good one for the franchise by the numbers alone and just because the Lambert family saga is finished doesn’t mean that we have escaped the “further” by any means. Never fear as a spinoff has already been announced. It’s titled Thread: An Insidious Tale, with Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani starring!
